Your right to a Good Faith Estimate.
You deserve to know what your care will cost, with no surprises. Here is what that means and the protections you are entitled to under federal law.
What is a Good Faith Estimate?
Under the federal No Surprises Act, which took effect on January 1, 2022, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate explaining how much your medical and mental health care will cost.
Health care providers are required to give people who are uninsured, or who are not planning to use insurance, an estimate of the expected charges for services, including psychotherapy. This helps you understand and plan for the cost of your care ahead of time.
What you are entitled to.
- You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services, including therapy.
- You can ask us, or any provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service.
- If you schedule a service at least three business days in advance, we will provide your estimate in writing within one business day of scheduling.
- For ongoing care, your estimate covers up to twelve months. A new estimate is provided each year if you continue in therapy.
- Your Good Faith Estimate is an estimate only. It is not a contract and does not require you to receive any of the services listed.
If your bill is higher than expected.
A Good Faith Estimate is based on the information known at the time it is created. It does not include unknown or unexpected costs that might come up during treatment.
If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to dispute it. You must start the dispute process within 120 calendar days of the date on your original bill. There is a $25 fee to use the dispute process.
Make sure to save a copy or a picture of your Good Faith Estimate so you have it for reference.
