Does this sound familiar?
Sometimes anxiety does not feel like anxiety. It feels like being fine, until suddenly you are not.
That is not just stress. That is a person who has been running way past empty for a long time.
High-functioning anxiety is still anxiety
A lot of the people we work with do not think of themselves as anxious. They are productive. They meet their deadlines. They show up. But underneath that they are running on constant low-level dread, checking, preparing, anticipating, managing. The performance is real. So is the cost.
For neurodivergent people, anxiety and ADHD or autism often overlap in ways that make each harder to see clearly. The hypervigilance looks like conscientiousness. The avoidance looks like laziness. The shutdown looks like not caring. We know the difference, and we know how to work with it.
Burnout is what happens when anxiety runs the show for too long without enough recovery. Your nervous system has been pushed past its limits, and it is telling you. We help you figure out how you got here and what actually helps you recover.
Who we work with
Anxiety shows up differently at different stages of life.
High achievers and perfectionists
You succeed, and it never feels like enough. The bar keeps moving. We help you understand what is driving the pressure and find a way to live that is not built on constant output.
Neurodivergent adults with anxiety
When ADHD or autism is in the picture, anxiety is almost always part of it too. We work with the full picture, not just the most obvious symptom.
Teens carrying more than they show
Academic pressure, social exhaustion, the constant performance of being fine. Anxiety in teens often goes unnoticed because they are still showing up. We help them put some of that weight down.
People in burnout
When you hit the wall, when you cannot push through anymore, that is not a personal failure. It is information. We help you figure out what your system needs and build something more sustainable.
People who have been managing it alone for a long time
Sometimes anxiety has just been the background noise of your whole adult life. You adapted around it. You got good at functioning. We help people figure out what it looks like to actually put it down.
Here is what changes.
Not the absence of anxiety. A life where it is not in charge anymore.
01
Your nervous system gets some room.
You start to notice when you are activated, and you have more say in what happens next. The constant bracing starts to ease up.
02
You understand what is actually driving it.
Anxiety rarely exists on its own. We help you see what is underneath it, the beliefs, the patterns, the history, so you are working on the right things.
03
You stop over-functioning as a coping strategy.
When productivity and busyness are how you manage fear, slowing down feels dangerous. We help you find steadier ground that does not depend on constant output.
04
Rest actually feels like rest.
Not something you earn. Not something that comes with guilt. Just actual recovery, because your system is not working against you anymore.
Approaches we use for anxiety and burnout
Often connected to anxiety, we help with these too
Our approach to anxiety therapy
A lot of the people we work with have high-functioning anxiety. On the outside, you are managing, achieving, holding it all together. On the inside, your mind never quite stops and your body never fully settles. We do not just help you manage symptoms. We help you understand what is driving the anxiety underneath, and for many of our clients, that includes undiagnosed ADHD or autism, or a nervous system shaped by years of trauma.
Getting to the root, not just the symptoms
Using CBT and ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), we help you notice the thought patterns that fuel anxiety, loosen their grip, and reconnect with what actually matters to you. Rather than fighting anxious thoughts, we help you change your relationship with them, so they carry less weight and pull you around less.
Calming the nervous system
Anxiety is not only in your head, it lives in your body. Using somatic approaches, mindfulness, and nervous system regulation techniques, we help you get back in touch with your body, recognize the early signs of overwhelm, and come back to a settled state. This is often where lasting relief comes from, especially when anxiety has become your baseline.
Working with burnout
When anxiety has tipped into burnout, pushing harder is not the answer. We use motivational interviewing and a strengths-based, compassionate approach to help you rebuild capacity, set boundaries that protect your energy, and find a pace that is actually sustainable for you.
What it is like to work with our team
Every clinician at Ideal Psychology Group is neurodivergent or deeply connected to someone who is. That shapes everything about how we work. You will not have to explain what it feels like when your mind will not slow down, or why rest feels impossible, or how exhausting it is to look fine while quietly running on empty. We already understand, because many of us have lived it.
We are a fully virtual practice serving teens and adults across Michigan, and we specialize rather than trying to treat everything. That focus means your therapist understands how anxiety intertwines with neurodivergence, trauma, and the pressure of holding it all together. You are matched with a therapist based on your specific needs, not just whoever has an opening.
Getting started is simple
You fill out our form, and we reach out within one business day to match you with the right therapist, verify your insurance, and get your first session on the calendar. If you would like, you can start with a free 15 minute consultation to make sure the fit feels right before you commit. We are in-network with Aetna, BCBS PPO, Blue Care Network, and Priority Health, so for most clients cost is not a barrier to getting started.
From there, therapy is collaborative and paced to you. Your first sessions focus on understanding what is fueling the anxiety and what you want to feel instead. From there we build the tools and self-understanding that help you feel calmer and more like yourself, week after week.
