Autism and AuDHD therapy in Michigan

Does this sound familiar?

Autism in adults, especially those diagnosed late, often looks nothing like the stereotype. It looks like someone who is highly intelligent, deeply empathetic, and quietly exhausted.

Social situations take everything out of you, even ones that go well
You have always felt like you were watching other people from slightly outside the group
You replay conversations for hours afterward picking apart what you said
You have a script running in the background when you are around people, and it is exhausting to maintain
Sensory things that seem minor to other people genuinely derail your whole day
You feel things incredibly deeply, and have been told your whole life that you are too sensitive
You are loyal, thorough, and deeply principled, and have been called rigid or difficult for it
You got your diagnosis and the grief hit harder than you expected
You have spent so long performing a version of yourself for other people that you do not know what is actually you
You have wondered your whole life why everything feels like it requires so much more effort than it seems to for everyone else

There is nothing wrong with how your brain works. There is something wrong with a world that was not built for it, and a lot of room to build a life that actually fits.

What we know about autism in adults and teens

Most autistic adults were not diagnosed as children. They were described as shy, oversensitive, gifted, anxious, or difficult, depending on the day. They learned to read rooms, mirror people, and perform a version of themselves that was easier for everyone else to be around. That performance is called masking, and it costs an enormous amount.

Getting a late diagnosis is often a relief and a grief at the same time. It explains so much. It also means looking back at a life and seeing all the places you were struggling, and no one had the right framework to help.

Autism looks different across genders. It is often less recognized in women, girls, and nonbinary people, who tend to mask more effectively and get diagnosed much later. It also looks different when ADHD is also present. AuDHD has its own distinct profile and needs a different approach than treating either one alone.

We are neuroaffirming, we do not see autism as something to fix. We see it as a neurotype with real strengths, real challenges, and a person behind it who deserves care that actually fits them.

When both are present

AuDHD, autism and ADHD together

AuDHD is not just ADHD plus autism stacked on top of each other. The two neurotypes interact in ways that can make each one harder to see, and harder to treat if only one is being addressed.

The ADHD craves novelty and stimulation. The autism needs predictability and routine. These pull in opposite directions and the internal friction can be relentless. Emotional dysregulation, demand avoidance, and intense sensitivity are common. Burnout hits harder and takes longer to recover from.

We work with AuDHD as its own thing, not as two separate conditions to manage independently. That means therapy that holds both at once and accounts for how they shape each other.

What changes in therapy.

We do not try to make you less autistic. We help you understand yourself, and build a life that works for you.

01

Things start to make sense.

The patterns that confused you about yourself, the social exhaustion, the sensory overload, the need for predictability, have a framework now. That changes how you see your whole history.

02

You stop masking as much.

Piece by piece you figure out what is actually you and what is the performance. That process is slower than it sounds, and more meaningful than you might expect.

03

You get better at protecting your energy.

Understanding your limits is not a weakness. Knowing what depletes you and what restores you, and building a life around that, changes everything about how sustainable daily life feels.

04

You find your people.

Relationships shift when you stop trying to perform for everyone. The right connections become easier to find and easier to sustain, because you are showing up as yourself.
